Baby Cakes! (& Purees)
When Jeannie Marrugo had her daughter, Camila, she wanted to make sure her little girl ate good food. “I wanted to make her baby food,” Marrugo says, but “I quickly realized how time-consuming it was.”
As a working parent, Marrugo knew time was precious. She was sure she wasn’t the only busy mom who wanted to have fresh baby food on hand for her child, and so she and her mother, Sherri Sego, came up with a plan.
In June of 2016, Café Baby, a home delivery service of fresh baby food, was born.
Marrugo explains what makes Café Baby’s offerings different from regular store-bought brands. “With processed baby food, fruits and vegetables are cooked at a very high temperature to extend shelf life, which in turn kills all of the vitamins and minerals,” she says. “We steam or bake all of our fruits and vegetables, puree them, and freeze them upon completion to seal all of the flavor and nutrients.” Café Baby products come with thawing instructions, and foods are pureed to different consistencies, depending on the age of the baby.
Popular favors include a green bean and pear blend, carrots and brown rice, cinnamon apple sweet potatoes, zucchini pizza, homemade apple pie, and a baby beef stew. Marrugo and Sego also offer a line of baked items, including muffins, French toast, and apple sweet potato poofs. The food, which ranges in price from $4.99 to $7.99, can be ordered through the Café Baby website, and is also available through Sunflower Diaper Service, The Urban Chalkboard and Simply Natural Baby Store.
